Komondors are a very ancient breed originating in Hungary over 1200 years ago.  When the Magyars migrated to the area now known as Hungary with their flocks of sheep and goats, their families and flocks were well guarded by these dogs.  They are a large breed of dog and should possess a large boned frame, muscular build and impressive demeanor.  Komondors are always white and have a rather incredible coat.  The coat should be thick and grow to great lengths, "cording" as the dog reaches maturity.  An adult dog in a full show coat strongly resembles an overgrown ragmop!  Bred for centuries to work independently of man, they are very intelligent and can be rather strong willed.

Historically, Komondors have been used as guardians for livestock, a job at which they still excel.  Intelligent and devoted, they readily bond to many types of animals living with their charges 24 hours a day to protect them from predators and strangers.  With an adult Komondor on duty, flocks suffer little to no predator loss even when maintained in rough pastures.  In general, there are many misconceptions regarding LGDs.  We cover many of these on our pages.  For another great, concise review of many of these, please read Carolee Penner's Guarddogblog, Myths and Misconceptions Regarding LGDs, Parts I through III.

Showing is another area in which Komondors perform well.  When maintained in show coats, there are few dogs as impressive as the Komondor! As well, Komondors are generally proud in bearing, regal and should have a free flowing gait.  Watch any televised dog show and you will be certain to see the Komondor in the Working Group.  The cameras and announcers are generally quite taken with them!  However, while Komondors are very intelligent and learn easily, obedience is seldom an area where they will perform consistently.  Some dogs seem to feel they make better decisions than their owners and decide "tricks" are silly things!  So if obedience trials are your thing, be prepared for possible inconsistent results.

The area in which Komondors are at their finest, however, is as the family pet.  No where will you find a more devoted, loving companion for yourself or your children.  They will bond as completely to the family as they ever have to a flock, with particular care for small children and infants.  While protective of the family, with supervision Komondors well readily recognize and accept family friends.

Braefiddich has been involved with this special breed for many years, and breeding them for almost as long.  Most of our Komondors are working dogs, living with flocks of sheep and goats as their ancestors did over a thousand years ago.  Komondors have done a superior job for us, preventing predator losses in every pasture situation.  We also keep housedogs and have been involved in conformation showing.  The dogs were exceptional with the grandchildren when they lived on the farm.  Many of our puppies have gone on to fill roles as show dogs, breeding stock and family pets.  In nearly all cases, our clients have been more than happy with them.  Of course, we also sell very fine guardian dogs to folks! We do not approve of cross-breeding for any reason and will not knowingly place any of our dogs in that situation. Braefiddich has had rescues and adopted crossbreds in the past but we do not wish to add to the problem.

Braefiddich's puppies are well-cared for, with all shots and dewormings.  They are well socialized and early bonded to be predator aggressive and family safe.  Braefiddich's puppies will be ready to fill that special role for you, whether in your home, the show ring or pasture.
